"Do It Again" is a song by the American rock band the Beach Boys that was released equally single on July 8, 1968.[3] [iv] It was written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love as a cocky-witting callback to the group's before surf image, which they had not embraced since 1964. Love and Wilson as well share the lead vocal on the song.

The vocal was issued only 2 weeks after the release of the band's album Friends, with the anthology track "Wake the Globe" as its B-side. It reached number xx on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and became their second number one hit in the UK. A slightly edited version of the vocal, using an excerpt from the Smile outtake "Workshop", later appeared as the opening track on the Embankment Boys' 1969 album 20/twenty.

"Do It Again" has been rerecorded once by the ring (in 2011), in one case by Wilson equally a solo artist (in 1995), and twice by Love every bit a solo artist (in 1996 and 2017). The song was an influence on Neil Sedaka'due south "Love Will Go along Us Together" (1973), Eric Carmen's "She Did It" (1977), ABBA'south "On and on and On" (1980), and Hall & Oates' "Did Information technology in a Minute" (1982).

Background and recording [edit]

"Practice It Over again" is a cocky-conscious callback to the band's earlier surf-based material. Originally titled "Rendezvous", the lyrics to the song were inspired after a day Mike Dear had spent at the beach in which he had gone surfing with an old friend named Pecker Jackson.[5] Mike then showed the lyrics to his cousin Brian Wilson, who proceeded to write the music to Mike'southward lyrics of nostalgia. Brian stated that he believes the vocal was the all-time collaboration that he and Mike ever worked on.[5] Love commented, "He remembers it existence at my business firm. I call back it as being at his business firm. He starts pounding at the pianoforte, I was summoning up the words and we got a chorus together, which was basically a agglomeration of doo-wop inspired harmonies. We created that whole vocal in xv minutes."[6] Other inspiration came from Hank Ballard'south & The Midnighters 1960 song "Finger Poppin' Time".[7] Carl Wilson recalled in Tune Maker:

Yeah, I suppose it has got the old Beach Boys surfing audio. It's back to that surfing thought with the vocalism harmony and the simple, direct melody and lyrics. We didn't plan the record as a return to the surf or anything. We simply did information technology one day circular a pianoforte in the studio. Brian had the thought and played it over to usa. We improved on that and recorded it very quickly, in about five minutes. It'south certainly not an old track of ours; in fact it was recorded simply a few weeks before information technology was released. Nosotros liked how information technology turned out and decided to release it.[5]

Conversely, Bruce Johnston told a reporter in September 1968 that he shared the reporter'due south underwhelming opinion of the vocal. "I don't like it etiher. I don't think that the grouping were entirely happy with information technology, only everyone else was going dorsum to basics, so I suppose it was inevitable that we should."[8]

During the mixdown, engineer Stephen Desper came upward with the drum event heard at the beginning of the rails. He explained that he had "commissioned Philips, in Holland, to build ii record delay units for use on the road (to double alive vocals). [he] moved 4 of the Philips Atomic number 82 heads very close together and then that ane drum strike was repeated four times about 10 milliseconds autonomously, and blended it with the original to requite the result you hear."[ citation needed ]. Drums were played past Dennis Wilson and session musician John Guerin; tambourine and wood blocks were also played by Guerin.[9] [10]

Promotional film [edit]

A promotional motion-picture show, directed by Peter Clifton, was shot in Los Angeles. The film, shot in color, features the grouping pulling up in a van and visiting a surfing shop. The band and then drives to the beach in their van and begins surfing. The first screenings of the promotional film were shown on BBC I'south Acme of the Pops during broadcasts of the evidence on August viii, 22 and 29. In Germany the promotional film was shown in September during broadcasts of the Hits A Become Go prove on ZDF TV. The clip was later featured in the 1969 Peter Clifton Australian surfing moving-picture show Fluid Journeying.[4] An alternating promotional film for "Do It Once more" was planned with the thought to feature special guest, Beatles fellow member Paul McCartney equally a clerk. Notwithstanding the idea was abandoned due to his decorated schedule.[11]

Release [edit]

Released on July 19, 1968 in the Britain the single, forty days after its release, peaked at No. 1 on the UK Singles Nautical chart on Baronial 28, 1968, and thus condign the band'south 2d number one hit in the United Kingdom subsequently "Good Vibrations" two years earlier.[3] Love remembered thinking that the vocal's success in United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland "was unbelievable. It showed how many fans nosotros had at that place and how attractive the whole California lifestyle is." When Friends was issued in Nihon, "Practice Information technology Once again" was included in its track list.[12] In Great britain's Disc & Music Echo, Penny Valentine praised the single:

This is a vast comeback on The Embankment Boys' terminal unmarried, and thank goodness for it. Information technology sounds like bees humming on a summer breeze and is so completely solid; there isn't room for a fly to creep in. It goes on very gently and easily and is very, very pleasant. In a way information technology reminds me of one of the tracks off Pet Sounds, which is nice to say the least, and a hit it volition nigh certainly be. I can imagine a few people volition be muttering, "Well, she said they were finished," but I didn't. I said they should get back to their competent, commercial sound and they take. And then there.[4]

"Practice It Again" remained at the tiptop position for only one week, afterward which information technology was supplanted by the Bee Gees' "I've Gotta Get a Message to Yous".[3]

Influence and utilize in media [edit]

Neil Sedaka borrowed the main riff from "Exercise Information technology Once more" for his ain song "Love Will Go along The states Together," a hit for the Helm and Tennille.[xiii]

Eric Carmen credited the "did-its" in this vocal with beingness the initial inspiration for his 1977 Top 40 hit, "She Did Information technology".[14] Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys also participated in the production and vocals of Carmen'southward song. "Did It in a Minute", a 1982 striking by Hall & Oates, was in turn inspired past the 'did-its' in both songs.[15] [16]

ABBA's "On and On and On" (1980) was as well influenced by "Do It Again", and in response, Mike Love recorded a comprehend version of the ABBA song for his 1981 album Looking Back with Honey.[17]

The opening drum line of "Practise It Over again" was sampled for "Remember" by French electronic duo Air on their album Moon Safari (1997).[18]

"Practise It Again" was featured in the films One Crazy Summer, Flipper, Life on the Longboard, and Happy Feet.[ commendation needed ]
